Fed: ATO privacy breaches raise further Smartcard concerns: ALP

The Labor Party says Australians will lose confidence in the government's planned Smartcard
.. after another episode of bureaucrats accessing personal records they shouldn't have
looked at.

The Australian Taxation Office has confirmed it's taken disciplinary action against
27 employees for breaches of privacy.

Four have been sacked.

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO's described the privacy breaches as unacceptable .. praising
the Tax Office for punishing the offending staff.

Labor says the case again raises concerns about the government's planned Smartcard
.. which would contain the cardholder's personal health and welfare details.
